Question 1: Describe the use of a poem and drawing activity to stimulate interest in reading.
Answer 1: Activities can help motivate children to read by using both writing poetry and art in a creative manner. One such activity would be to write and illustrate cinquains. A cinquain, also called a quintain, is a poem with a five-line stanza that is varied in time and line. It's rhyme scheme is usually ababb. The illustrations to accompany the poem should be kept simple by cutting out a shape which is representative of the poem's subject. The student can copy the cinquain on a white sheet of paper. They then may put the shape under the paper and color it with short paperless crayons. Students should use the side of the crayon and color over the shape until its outline can be made out. Students should keep the colors and details limited as they both could detract from the words.

Question 2: Discuss the use of several art and word activities to help stimulate interest in reading and writing.
Answer 2: 1) Writing and illustrating sentence pyramids can be a good exercise that expands thought and adds detail. 2) Ask students to draw self-portraits of how they look now, but have the picture dressed as they will for their future profession. They can include some background which will show their work place. Have them write about where they will go to school and what they will study in order to prepare for their professions. 3) Have students cut out an article of clothing such as a sweatshirt or T-shirt and decorate the item. The design may be made up or taken from some piece of clothing that is a favorite. Then have the child write a story about the article clothing and describe its life in a single day.
Question 3: Explain how a photography activity might stimulate language arts study.
Answer 3: Students, such as those in junior high, could be taught basic photography skills using digital cameras and computers. Along with those activities, the teacher could link the writing process and traits of writing to provide a connection to reading and writing for the students. Once the students learn the basic photography skills, they can apply them along with the writing process—brainstorming, organizing, writing, revising, editing and publishing—in order to do a photography assignment. Then similar procedures could be done for a follow-up writing assignment. This activity helps connect understanding of words and pictures by having the students look for a main idea, supporting those ideas with detail as well as drawing conclusions and inferences.
