Question 1: Discuss the importance of a checklist in determining one’s own multicultural competence.

Answer 1: A checklist can provide a rubric for counselors to assess their own level of multicultural awareness, sensitivity, and competence. For counselors commencing their own edification in multicultural sensitivity, or those who are relatively new and beginning the process of multicultural training, checklists can provide a set of goals to attain in the process of becoming more aware of multicultural issues. Counselors can see which issues or concerns are in need of further work, and can take advantage of the available resources for development in these areas. Once these goals are attained, counselors can periodically review the checklist to ascertain if they are continuing to incorporate the guidelines and strategies represented by the checklist, and can again refer to outside resources if indicated. The Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, as well as other agencies, publishes appropriate checklists that address such issues as behavior, knowledge, sensitivity, and awareness.

Question 2: Discuss factors and behaviors associated with at-risk students.

Answer 2: It is important for counselors to be aware of the events and influences that place students at risk, as well as the potential ramifications of unstable behavior and mental state. Counselors should be aware of changes in student behavior that may signal depression or other mental or emotional fragility. It is worth mentioning that the leading cause of death for young people is suicide, and therefore that counselors are in a pivotal position to notice and respond to these symptoms. Some students may need more intensive treatment than school counseling. Some of the factors that can contribute to emotional vulnerability for at-risk students are rising levels of poverty, substance abuse of the student or parents, domestic violence, and community violence. Other kinds of behavior problems may be a result of ADHD or other behavior disorders, and may indicate the need for the student to be referred to special education resources in the school.

Question 3: Discuss how counselors can include the needs of at-risk students when delivering curriculum.

Answer 3: Counselors are generally responsible for addressing the academic as well as the career and social development needs of students. To that end, they should be well versed in the areas of leadership, advocacy, systemic change, and collaboration. Also, they should develop and continually refine the skills to teach these subjects to diverse groups of students, including at-risk students. Within the category of at-risk students are included those students whose behavior and performance are a result of family or socioeconomic factors, as well as students who come from a more stable background but suffer from physiological disabilities.
