Automobile Operation and Maintenance, Part 6
Question 1: Name the five types of lights on a vehicle's exterior and describe their function.
Answer 1: Vehicles have five sets of lights that help you communicate with other drivers and see at night. These lights are the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and tail lights. The headlights and taillights allow you to see and be seen when driving at night. The turn signals blink on the right or left side of the car to signal vehicles around you that you plan to turn or change lanes. Brake lights are at the back of the car and signal vehicles behind you that you are applying the brakes and are slowing down or stopping. Your reverse lights are small white lights at the back of your vehicle that signal you are in a reverse gear and may be backing up.
There are lots of good resources about Automobile that you can find available.
Question 2: Explain the dangers of a damaged windshield and damaged windshield wipers.
Answer 2: Your windshield provides visibility when driving. If your view becomes obstructed, you become a less safe driver. Damaged or cracked windshields can obstruct visibility. They also are more likely to break if you are involved in an accident or if your windshield is struck by debris. You should arrange for cracked or extensively chipped windshields to be fixed or replaced. Your windshield wipers keep your windshield clear during inclement weather. Wiper blades become worn over time and can result in reduced visibility. Replacing wiper blades is an easy task that most drivers can do on their own. Most automobile stores carry a variety of wiper blades that you can purchase as replacements.
Question 3: Describe a vehicle's steering system and common indications that it is malfunctioning.
Answer 3: Most vehicles now have power steering. This hydraulic system consists of the steering wheel and a hydraulic pump that leverages the force of your turning action, making it easier to turn the vehicle. The engine drives the hydraulic pump.Another less common power steering system is an electric version. This kind of system uses a computer module to respond to torque on the steering wheel. A small electric motor then applies force to the wheels during a turn. Electric power steering systems improve gas mileage. Steering system problems are easy to identify. If you notice a sudden or gradual change in the ease with which you can turn or if you have to turn the wheel a lot before the vehicle responds, then take your car in and have a mechanic check the steering system.
