Diversity, Collaboration and Professionalism- Learning Across Curriculum, Part 6

Question 1: Describe the nature of instruction during a preschool day.

Answer 1: The most important thing for preschool teachers to remember is that learning should address all of the developmental areas of a child. These include social, emotional, language, physical, and intellectual areas. However, many skills in one area will develop through activities in another area. Learning to some degree will take place naturally as children interact with their environment and others. However, some skills have to be taught. Research has shown that a good teaching strategy is to build new learning on the past experiences (or what the child already knows). For example, success in reading is dependent on early sound awareness and vocabulary-building activities in preschool.

There are lots of good resources about Diversity that you can find available.

Question 2: Discuss other instructional strategies of a preschool teacher.

Answer 2: Preschool teachers can help children to develop listening and speaking skills by asking open-ended questions, exposing them to new words, allowing the children to take part in conversations, and being warm and encouraging. Reading aloud to children is important because it is here that they learn about printed words and their meanings. Another strategy for language and literacy development is to share books with a child. Providing many opportunities to hear the sounds of words develops reading readiness. This can be done through playing games and listening to books being read. Young children should have many opportunities to explore their environment and to learn about the world. Through these activities language is developed and problem-solving skills are learned.

Question 3: Discuss how preschool teachers can monitor the progress of the children in an effective manner.

Answer 3: Preschool teachers can monitor the progress of the children in many different ways. The progress needs to cover academic, social, and emotional development. Monitoring progress is important because it helps the teacher plan instruction and also be sure all of the needs of the child are being addressed. This can be done by:Observing the child while he plays and interacts with othersKeeping samples of his workMaking sure that progress is documentedConversing with the child about his progressConversing with the parents to find out what they have seen at homezza4zz
