Elements of Various Technical Reports

Question 1: List three types of headings and tell when to use them.

Answer 1: Topic headings: These are very short, usually one word or phrase, and are used when the text has many headings (ex. DVD Player Installation).Statement headings: Statement headings are typically a sentence or an unambiguous phrase. These headings emphasize something specific about the topic (ex. How to install a DVD Player to the TV).Question headings: Question headings effectively invite users to the document. They are used to mimic what the user is actually thinking (ex. How Do I Install this DVD Player to my TV?

There are lots of good resources about Technical Reports that you can find available.

Question 2: Discuss how to achieve parallelism in the different levels of headings.

Answer 2: One effective way to achieve parallelism is to label the headings h1, h2, h3, and h4 during the drafting process. Once finished with the drafting process, go back and format all headings consistently. You can achieve consistency by using the same formatting for all h1 headings, and likewise for h2, h3, and h4 headings. Incorporating heading parallelism in the page design will help to visually orient the reader. You should also strive for grammatical consistency between heading groups. If the first h2 heading uses the question format, then all h2 headings should follow that precedent.

Question 3: Define the terms formal definition and informal definition.

Answer 3: A formal definition is one way of establishing clarity for the reader. A formal definition defines a term by assigning it to a category and distinguishing the features of the term that make it unique in comparison to other terms within the same category. An informal definition, usually associated with dictionaries and thesauruses, provides a synonym of the unfamiliar term that is more familiar to the reader.
