Fashion and Textiles, Part 3

Question 1: Explain the washing techniques that the following care instructions identify:1. No Spin2. Delicate, gentle, durable, or permanent press cycle3. Wash separately

Answer 1: 1. Applicable only if a garment is being machine-washed, no spin means that the garment should be removed from the washer before the final spin cycle to avoid being damaged.2. When the care instructions indicate delicate cycle, gentle cycle, durable cycle, or permanent press cycle, the instructions refer to the cycle setting on a washing machine that should be used to minimize the chances of damage to a garment. Stronger materials can usually be washed on any setting, but some materials are more delicate and therefore more likely to be damaged during longer cycles when the inside of the washing machine is spinning faster for a longer period of time.3. Wash separately means that a garment should not be washed with other garments or should be washed with garments of a similar color. Garments usually need to be washed separately because either the colors in the garment are likely to run and damage other clothing or the garment is likely to pick up colors from other clothing.

There are lots of good resources about Textiles that you can find available.

Question 2: Explain the washing techniques that the following care instructions identify:1. Hand-wash and hand-wash only2. Dry-clean only or no dry-clean.3. Tumble-dry or drip-dry.

Answer 2: 1. The instruction hand-wash means that a garment should not be machine-washed, but it can be washed by hand or dry-cleaned. Garments that should be hand-washed have this particular instruction because they are extremely delicate. Hand-wash garments are usually washed in warm water. Hand-wash only means that the garment should be washed by hand; any other method, including dry cleaning, should not be used.2. Dry-clean only means that the garment should not be cleaned by a commercial laundry service or a home method and should only be dry-cleaned. No dry clean means that the garment should never be dry cleaned.3. Tumble-dry means that a garment can be dried using a normal dryer. The temperature that should be used—low, medium, or high—usually follows the “tumble-dry” instruction. Drip-dry means that a garment should be hung while it is still wet and let dry.

Question 3: Define the following terms:1. Fiber2. Yarn3. Thread4. Fabric

Answer 3: 1. Fibers are thin filaments similar to thread found in plants or the fur of animals. Fibers can also be man-made filaments that are formed by forcing chemicals through small holes called spinnerets. These fibers are used for a number of different purposes including the construction of yarn, thread, and fabric.2. Yarn is a collection of long lengths of tightly spun fibers that are used in the production of fabric.3. Thread is a collection of long, thin lengths of fibers that are used for sewing two fabrics together.4. Fabric is a material constructed by weaving or knitting yarn together to form a type of cloth. Fabrics come in a wide range of colors, textures, and appearances and can be used to make such items as carpeting, towels, and clothing.
