Foundations of Education, Part 30

Question 1: Describe the pros and cons of teacher standards.

Answer 1: State and school district teacher standards were developed and implemented in an attempt to ensure schools were providing high-quality teaching to all students. The results of these standards are teacher assessments based on students’ test scores for standardized tests. Pros of these standards include accountability, as they assess not only the students’ progress and achievement but also the teachers’ skills to a point as well. One of the main cons of the standards is the stress placed on the teachers. As salary increases or contract renewal often depends on the results of these tests, some teachers may find themselves preparing students only for the test. This hinders the learning process and may not adequately prepare students for the following grades.

Question 2: List five ways a teacher can learn to deal with stress.

Answer 2: Five ways to deal with stress include exercising, eating properly, practicing meditation, having a strong support group or family, and joining professional organizations. While there are many ways to handle the stress of being a teacher, staying healthy is one way to combat this issue. Teachers who eat properly and exercise on a regular basis will be more alert and better able to deal with various issues throughout their day. Additionally, having a support system such as a family or being a member of a professional organization can serve as an outlet when problems arise. Finally, in terms of professional organizations, teacher members have numerous educational opportunities, including stress management, through these groups.

Question 3: Define the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Answer 3: The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is a nonprofit group that is responsible for providing teachers their certifications based on abilities and general knowledge. This organization was developed in 1987 under a recommendation of the Task Force on Teaching as a Profession. Teachers eligible to apply for a national teaching certification must have at least a bachelor’s degree, three years of teaching experience, and a state teaching license. There are a number of elements involved in this rigorous test, and candidates will undergo an interview, must provide a portfolio, and will participate in teaching simulations.
