Hardware and Systems Technology, Part 3

Question 1: Identify the following computer devices: digital camera, printer, monitor, and PC speaker.

Answer 1: A digital camera takes and records pictures. As an input device, it can connect to a computer (usually through a USB port) and download pictures onto the hard drive. A printer is an output device capable of creating paper copies of documents, including text files, pictures, and graphs. Certain printers are designed solely to perform specialty functions, such as printing pictures. PC speakers are output devices that allow computers to produce sound. They are especially important for certain kinds of software systems (such as music programs) and web sites that have sound or music accompaniment. Sound also allows the computer to alert the user.

There are lots of good resources about Systems Technology that you can find available.

Question 2: Discuss personal computers.

Answer 2: A personal computer, or PC, is any computer designed for use by a single individual without intervening operators. It has a separate operating system, and is considerably smaller and less expensive than mainframe computers and large data processing systems; consequently, it possesses reduced processing capability and speed. Desktop computers, laptops, tablet PCs, and handheld PCs are examples of personal computers, most of which offer the following software applications: word processing, database, spreadsheet, Email, web browsing, gaming, and other types of personal productivity and specialty software. Most PCs use an Intel x86 or x64-compatible microprocessor with a Windows Operating System—this is known as the Wintel platform. PCs are suitable for both home and the workplace, and are capable of running high speed internet and being connected through a LAN.

It has an electronic visual display that can show web pages and other documents. Newer versions possess audio speakers and touch screens, and can function as mobile phones or portable media players. PDAs typically possess the following features:Touch screen – The user can interact with the touch screen using a detachable stylus, usually through a virtual keyboard or by writing letters on the screen. Memory card – PDAs have slots and ports that support flash drives and SB cards.Wired connectivity – PDAs can connect to a computer though USB cable. Wireless connectivity – Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity are common features on most PDAs.Synchronization – PDAs can receive immediate updates from a PC.
