Question 1: What are the basic CDC guidelines for family and community health involvement?
Answer 1: The Centers for Disease Control has issued some basic guidelines for schools to incorporate families and the community into school health programs. First, schools need to communicate their health programs and services to families. It is important for parents to know what materials and services are available to their children. Many schools have a specific employee charged with acting as a liaison between the school and the community. A number of schools benefit from a close working relationship with external health organizations and professionals. Many schools also open up school exercise facilities to members of the community. Schools should have a protocol in place in the event that a health educator needs to contact a student’s family immediately.

Question 2: Describe and discuss intellectual health.
Answer 2: When health professionals consider a person’s intellectual health, they are considering his or her ability to gather and process information, to make decisions, to set goals, and to solve problems. Intellectual health also means being able to learn from experience, being open to new ideas, and being able to question and evaluate new information. This ability to think critically about new information is crucial to success in every area of life: for instance, achieving social health means choosing one’s friends carefully, and achieving physical health means making the right decisions for one’s body. One aspect of intellectual health that has become increasingly discussed in the health community is emotional intelligence: the ability to manage one’s moods.
Question 3: Define and describe environmental health.
Answer 3: Although many people would not consider the state of their environment to be a part of their overall health, a person’s surroundings will inevitably affect his or her health. Achieving optimal environmental health can mean protecting oneself from immediate dangers in the air, soil, and water or actively working to preserve positive environmental conditions. The various effects of environment on health are well documented: many chemicals and pollutants are known to cause cancer and other diseases, and individuals who do not take an active interest in beautifying their world are more likely to develop mental illness. It is important to recognize that total health does not just mean controlling one’s own behavior but also working with others to make the surrounding world healthier.
