Housing and Interior Design, Part 3

Question 1: Explain how a home can be a status symbol.

Answer 1: The major reason that a home can act as a status symbol for an individual or family that lives in it is because of the financial investment necessary to own a home. Regardless of the type of home that someone lives in, purchasing or leasing a home is usually the single largest expense that anyone will take on during his or her life. As a result, the home of an individual or family can act as an indication of the overall wealth that a person or family possesses. This means that the larger and more luxurious a house is, the greater the amount of wealth a person must have had in order to acquire that home. Since wealth is commonly associated with the status of an individual, the type of home that an individual or family lives in acts indicates their social status as well.

There are lots of good resources about Interior Design that you can find available.

Question 2: Identify and define the two major types of housing.

Answer 2: The two major types of housing that people live in are houses and apartments. A house is an entire building with the primary purpose of providing shelter for the individual or family that resides in it. An apartment is a section of a building that has been split into units, and the primary purpose of each unit is to provide shelter for the individual or family that lives in that unit. The major difference between and house and an apartment is that a building is considered a house if the whole building belongs to one individual, family, or several families that share the entire building or at least most of the building. On the other hand, a building is considered to be an apartment building or a complex if it contains separate sections or units that each allow individuals or families to live on their own without sharing a large portion of the building.

Question 3: Identify and briefly explain the three most common types of houses found in the United States.

Answer 3: The three major types of houses found in the United States are single-family houses, townhouses, and semi-detached houses. A single-family house is any building used for residential use that is separate from any other buildings. Townhouses are a series of buildings where all of the houses share both of their side walls with the buildings on each side, with the exception of the houses at the ends of the row, which only share one wall. Semi-detached houses are two residential buildings that share only a single wall and have empty space on their other side. These three major types of houses are typically determined by how much space is available around the building. A single-family home has space available on all sides, a semi-detached house has space clear in front, behind, and on one side of the house, and townhouses, with the exception of the townhouses on the end of the row, have space only in front and behind the house.
