Question 1: Discuss how theatre should be incorporated in curriculum for second graders.
Answer 1: Second-grade students should be taught about artistic perception through activities and lessons that utilize theatre vocabulary. Students should have the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of artistic perception by acting out alternative endings to stories. Students in second grade should be taught creative expression through those activities that allow them to perform in groups to build cooperation skills. For example, second graders can be shown how pantomime can portry concepts like hunger, anger, friendship, and excitement. With regard to theatre history and context, students can be taught to identify stories from different cultures, as well as to identify universal character-types. Aesthetic judgment can be developed by allowing students to recognize and critique an actor’s performance based on the actor’s use of voice, movement, and gesture. Additionally, second-grade students should have the ability to identify the moral of a story.

Question 2: Discuss how theatre should be incorporated in curriculum for third graders.
Answer 2: In third grade, students are further exposed to artistic perception through lessons on theatre vocabulary. They should also be taught to identify the five basic elements of a story: who, what, where, when, and why (the 5 Ws). Creative expression can be developed by allowing students to work together to write a script that uses the 5 Ws. Students should also be able to demonstrate a knowledge of stage direction by writing a script that uses basic blocking. Historical aspects of theatre can be taught by allowing students to perform different versions of similar stories from around the world. They should also be able to identify universal themes in stories. Third-grade students can be taught aesthetic judgment by developing and applying criteria to judge the success or quality of a performance. They should also be able to compare the content and messages contained in two separate works.
Question 3: Discuss how theatre should be incorporated in curriculum for fourth graders.
Answer 3: Students in fourth grade should continue expanding theatre vocabulary. They should also build upon their existing knowledge of artistic perspective by learning to identify a character’s motives. Students should learn how subtle changes in voice can be used to convey meaning during speaking and acting. Students should be taught how to use artistic expression by participating in activities that require them to express the emotions of actors through the use of gestures. They should also retell stories in various tones, including comic and tragic. Students should have the opportunity to create a character through the use of costumes, masks and props. In regard to the history of theatre, students should be introduced to local theatre history and trends. Students can develop aesthetic judgment abilities by critiquing performances based on the elements of acting they have studied. Besides understanding how audiences impact various types of performances, fourth-grade students should be able to view a dramatic performance and identify the methods employed by the scriptwriter to evoke certain kinds of responses from the audience.
