Journalism in the School Community, Part 8

Question 1: Describe assessment tools that an instructor can use to evaluate student progress.

Answer 1: Assessment tools include objective quizzes and tests, short-term and long-term story assignments, collaborative projects, and publications developed during the school year (e.g., issues of the student newspaper, yearbooks).

There are lots of good resources about Journalism that you can find available.

Question 2: Define consistency and the center of visual interest as principles of design.

Answer 2: Consistency means helping the reader recognize, identify, and comprehend information within the publication. The center of visual interest relates to the directional flow of reading. When designing a page, remember that most people view it in a “Z” pattern (starting in the upper-left corner, moving across to the right, then back to the left side of the page, going top to bottom).

Question 3: Provide examples of the vocabulary of desktop publishing.

Answer 3: “Alignment” means lining up the top, bottom, sides, and middle of the text or graphic elements on a page.A “bleed allowance” allows for deviations in cutting paper for the finished product; this allowance usually extends about 1/8 inch beyond the trim lines.A “gatefold” brings the left and right edges of a page inward (with parallel folds) and meets in the middle of the page without overlapping.
