Learning Environments and Experiences, Part 6

Question 1: Discuss ways in which you as a teacher can help students with different learning styles by the way you structure your lesson plans.

Answer 1: Since different students in your classroom have different learning styles, it is important to ensure all students will be able to learn from your lesson plan. Things to consider include:Structure your lessons plans so that all senses are stimulated in some way. In this way, visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners will all find some element of the lesson that works well for them.Do not limit yourself to the sensory style you prefer. If you are a visual learner, for example, you might automatically gravitate to more visually-based lesson presentations.Help students determine which learning style works best for them.

There are lots of good resources about Environments that you can find available.

Question 2: List and define three major teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learners in the classroom.

Answer 2: Three effective teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learners in a single classroom are:Cooperative learning. Diverse students learn together in mixed groups. The different individuals’ strengths work together for increased learning in the group.Multilevel teaching. Structuring lessons in order to present the same content in different ways and at different levels accommodates diverse learning styles and different levels of existing knowledge and ability.Peer tutoring. Allowing students to teach each other. All students should have the opportunity to be the teacher, without favoring certain students over others.

Question 3: Discuss the importance of clear objectives in teaching diverse learners.

Answer 3: Clear, well-defined objectives are important for any lesson plan, but they especially can help you plan lessons for diverse learners by providing a goal upon which to focus during lesson development. Diverse learners might need different approaches for their individual learning, but the end goal, in the form of a clear objective, will be the same for the entire classroom. These objectives should always be kept in sight as the goal, whether are planning lessons for different learning styles, students of different cultural backgrounds, or students who require assistive technology.
