Library/Educational Media, Part 11
Question 1: List the general guidelines used by the LMS to estimate the size of a media center budget.
Answer 1: Various organizations such as the AASL recommend that a school library material budget should be approximately five percent of the expenditure per student of the entire school district. The recommended five percent figure does not include salaries of non-library staff, special education costs, transportation, or school expansion or remodeling costs.Another useful tool for the library media specialist-teacher is the annual budget report from previous years. Previous-year budget reports may not be sufficient to achieve current media center and curriculum goals. Where a shortfall of funding is perceived, the library media specialist-teacher must convey this to school administration and budget prognosticators, emphasizing that successful libraries produce successful academic performance, according to existing studies.
There are lots of good resources about Library that you can find available.
Question 2: Identify four advantages of collaboration in teaching information literacy.
Answer 2: Collaboration in teaching information literacy has many advantages:Collaboration increases the chance of student success. Having the classroom teacher and the library media specialist work together means better educated, information-literate students.Collaboration requires the LMS to be an information literacy leader, and not a mere housekeeper of media center materials.Collaboration contributes to the education and training of other staff. It also is a way for the LMS to get connected with the different teacher strategies for reaching district curriculum goals.Collaboration with classroom teachers provides a kind of insurance for the ethical use of information. When all parties of a collaborative effort are allied in a single purpose and are mutually aware of the potential for plagiarism or unethical use, the students profit through better use of information tools and methods of organization.
Question 3: Describe the role of the SLMS as an information technology expert and consultant.
Answer 3: It is important for the school library media specialist to be available for consultation with other school staff, particularly classroom teachers. This does not mean doing the work of other staff, but collaborating with them, helping to keep them informed of technological developments and changes, and finding solutions for mutual curriculum problems. When you’re consulting with a classroom teacher, information and knowledge flows in two directions. The spread of technology in information learning is an immense field, and it is impossible to be aware of all aspects of it. However, the SLMS is a focal point, pulling together traditional resources and integrating them with new resources in information technology. Integration of technology with learning has high-cost initial outlays, but once implemented, it can help you function within budget constraints.
