Management of the Educational Organization, Part 6
Question 1: Discuss conflict avoidance methods.
Answer 1: Techniques that can be used for conflict resolution include conflict avoidance methods. One of these techniques is called the withdrawal method, where an administrator chooses not to argue in a certain situation and accepts whatever the outcome might be. When administrators act as if an issue does not matter to them personally, they are employing the strategy of indifference. An administrator can also avoid any circumstances that would cause conflict; this method is called isolation. Using the smooth over method involves an administrator’s completely accepting a situation and minimizing any arguments that may arise from it. The consensus method allows people to discuss their views and try to persuade others to agree with them. Although these methods avoid conflict, they do not resolve it. Nevertheless, these methods may be necessary for administrators to use, especially in situations when one group feels powerless in changing the views of another group.
There are lots of good resources about Educational that you can find available.
Question 2: Discuss the problem-solving approach to conflict resolution.
Answer 2: The problem-solving approach is another method of conflict resolution and can be the most effective. However, this method is usually successful only if the parties involved are willing to compromise and if agreement is actually possible. It is also important that all parties can contribute something valuable and are confident that the solution made will not exclude their interests. Groups should be allowed the opportunity to state their opinions, along with their conflicting positions. Groups should also restate the opinions and positions of their opponents as way of assuring them that their points of view have been heard and understood. Doing so also allows an administrator to be certain that groupa are clearly listening to each other. An administrator should then consult with the groups to clarify whether a conflict still exists. If so, group members should further discuss why their opinions and arguments are valid to them. When all members are finished stating their viewpoints, the administrator should ask the groups if they have anything further that they need to add to the discussion that will help in making a decision. Even when the problem-solving approach is used, there remains the possibility that conflict may still be unavoidable.
Question 3: Describe a school-based community.
Answer 3: A school-based community involves everyone in the decision-making process, including teachers, parents, and students. By working together, all three groups have essential roles in promoting a school-based community that focuses on continuing to improve the school. In addition to having a positive effect on student behavior and academic performance, this type of community encourages parents to take an active part in their children’s education. When the team members are able to work together and make decisions, it creates a feeling of ownership and responsibility. Aware of the school’s mission and goals, everyone is dedicated to helping the school achieve them. Although it may be difficult at times for everyone to agree on certain issues, conflict may be reduced if individuals can agree on issues by using “no fault” problem solving, collaborating with others, and making decisions by consensus. Such methods are more successful than voting because voting encourages people to take sides instead of working together as a school-based community.
