Motor Vehicle Laws and Regulations

Question 1: Describe the function of a vehicle title.

Answer 1: A vehicle's title is a legal document stating the vehicle's ownership. A title is usually required when you register your vehicle. In some cases, you may not have the original title for your vehicle. If you have lost your vehicle's title, you can contact the state that issued it originally and request a certified copy. If you are purchasing your vehicle on a loan, the loan issuer will often retain the title until you have paid for the vehicle in full. Again, if you need to show the title for any purpose, you can contact the loan issuer or the state and request a certified copy.

There are lots of good resources about Motor Vehicle that you can find available.

Question 2: Explain what to do with registration and title when a vehicle is sold.

Answer 2: When you sell your vehicle, the title must be transferred to the new owner. At the time of the sale, both you and the purchaser must sign and date the title or certificate of ownership. The person purchasing the vehicle keeps the title. Depending on the laws of the state in which you reside, it is usually the responsibility of the purchaser to file for a transfer of ownership within a set period of time. As the seller, it is a good idea to file a transfer, too. If the new owner is involved in an accident before filing the transfer or forgets to file the paperwork, this action helps insulate you from liability. If you are purchasing a vehicle from a dealer, the responsibility of filing a transfer of ownership usually falls to the dealer. Check your state's laws.
